Beginning in the early '90s, Yale-New Haven Hospital has honored the legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., slain civil rights leader, with a special program each January in remembrance of his birthday. This year, YNHH honored Dr. King with a program of awards to high school students and educational grants to local elementary schools.

YNHH awarded the $1,000 MLK Community Service Awards to three New Haven students who set an example in the community. Also, the hospital awarded $3,000 in MLK Educational Grants to three New Haven schools to use for special projects related to diversity.

This year, the hospital awarded seven scholarships at $8,000 each, renewable at $2,000 per year. Students must be a member of a minority group defined as Alaskan native, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black or Hispanic as well as a graduate of a Connecticut high school.

Diversity Strategic Initiative

Diversity Strategic Initiative ImageYale-New Haven is dedicated to sustaining an environment where the diversity of our patients and employees is valued. In our increasingly diverse environment, we recognize that diversity and inclusion must be a priority business objective if we are to remain a destination hospital and an employer of choice.

Hospital leadership has endorsed a strategic diversity and inclusion plan for YNHH which includes conducting a climate assessment to gain a better understanding of our existing strengths and opportunities in these areas and plan how best to capitalize on them.

YNHH's Religious Ministries Department periodically hosts religious services in observances of various holidays representing different religions and beliefs. The services are typically held during lunch and dinner time hours so that employees on different shifts may attend if they wish.
